February 2010

Once again this year the compound John Laign flooded following 7 days of uninterrupted rain.  This happened in February 2008 but not in 2009.  Our school and transit home and Women’s Group were all severely affected this year and Rev Zimba was able to shelter 5 of our families who had their home collapse in the water.

This part of John Laign has no plumbing or water and so the first thing to fill up and flood are the many pit latrines in the neighborhood.  So the flood water is foul-smelling and infectious and very hard on our kids.  In 2008, we brought them all the farm (13 extra kids) but this year we provided sand bags for Rev Z and some assistance with transport.

The good news is that the sand bags held for the remaining four days of water rising and the school became a small island amongst a raging river.  The 5th day the sun came out.  It wasn’t quite over yet, though, as water had to drain down from the nearby industrial area and the neighboring compound, so there was rushing rivers within rivers and several people were swept away.  There is near media black-out on these floods locally to keep people from complaining too much and the 6th day the water had receded by half and Anna and Brook were able to pay Rev Z a visit.
