WORKING in partnership to provide a child with a safe and secure home

Ruth after several weeks in the hospice
Ruth, after being released from palliative care.
The majority of the children we treat have incredibly complex needs that require us to work with external partners to ensure their successful treatment, and ability to lead healthy, happy lives.

This was the case when several months ago , a five year old girl was brought to the TTF Clinic, out of hours, in great distress, suffering with a severe infection which had left her with open sores all over her neck and body. It was apparent to all involvedthat she was in a great deal of pain and needed urgent treatment.

After discussions with our medical and social teams we immediately called upon one of our partners, Our Ladies Hospice, to request urgent palliative, in-patient treatment at their facility. Our Counsellor, Mwenda, pictured left, spoke to the mother and was quick to undertake several home assessments to understand the circumstances at home, with her mother and extended family, which had lead to Ruth becoming so sick.

It very quickly  became apparent to Mwenda and the team that Ruth was suffering from neglect and her family were unable to offer her the care and support she needed. Mwenda began the process of working with Social Welfare and speaking to several orphanages, that we regularly work with, to remove Ruth from her current living situation and find her a safe and secure home.

After only a week, Mwenda was able to successfully secure Ruth a place at Family Legacy, a local orphanage. In just the space of two months Ruth has gone from a sick, shy child who wouldn't look at you to a bubbly, happy, lively five year old.

By working quickly, in partnership with other organisations who provide specialist services, we have been able to ensure that this once incredibly sick child now has a chance to lead a healthy happy life with the medical and social treatment from Tiny Tim & Friends and a safe, secure home and access to education at Family Legacy.
