ZAMBIA HAS FEW PAEDIATRIC PALLIATIVE CARE FACILITIES – TTF WORK TO PROVIDE THESE ESSENTIAL SERVICES TO HIV+ CHILDREN
|
When HIV+ children are most in need, suffering with severe malnutrition, life limiting or life threatening conditions Tiny Tim & Friends offers paediatric palliative in-patient care and respite through our partner hospices in Lusaka. We work with these external partners to provide the high quality medical, counselling and nutritional support needed to ensure a full recovery and reduce the chances of a relapse of illness.
TTF Clinic does not yet have the facilities to provide overnight and concurrent in care support. By working with numerous hospices around Lusaka, we can find facilities which are more convenient for families, whilst our medical and social work teams of specialists can provide the paediatric support to the child and the hospice they will need in order for them to make a successful recovery.

WITH YOUR SUPPORT WE HELP TO CHANGE THEIR LIVES FOR THE BETTER!
HOW DOES OUR PALLIATIVE CARE WORK?
TTF works with a team of 20 local female volunteers to identify at risk, potentially HIV+ children in the community, who require immediate medical support, and would otherwise have been unknown to TTF. All of our volunteers are well respected women within their community, and provide a vital link between our clinical and social teams and those needing treatment in hard to reach areas. Once at risk children have been identified, they are given an immediate assessment by our medical team whilst our social team work to secure space at a relevant partner hospice for the duration of their recovery. During their time in palliative or respite care, we work with the family members/ care givers to ensure the child's long term improved health. Where returning the child is not an appropriate option TTF works with Lusaka Social Welfare to find a safe facility for the child. |
THE BENEFIT OF PALLIATIVE CARE - REAL LIFE STORIES
Through support from donors and partners we are able to provide free care services at our partner hospices. The unrestricted time in the hospice gives HIV+ children the relief from physical and psycho-social pain and symptoms they may be experiencing. We work to ensure that all children are fully recovered from their illness and remain with support until they are well enough to go home. In early 2014 one of our clients brought a young boy to the TTF Clinic after spotting him in her community. At just 13 years old, it was immediately clear from his appearance that Evision had a range of health issues. He was incredibly sick with a range of illnesses and needed urgent medical attention if he was to stand a chance at survival.
