EXPANDING OUR SERVICES FOR ADOLESCENTS

10/4/2019

Adolescents are often overlooked, and many HIV interventions are not tailored to their specific needs. With support from Egmont Trust Funding and the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) Small Grants, TTF received funds to work within key compounds in Lusaka to develop programs that provide tailored, supportive, and safe spaces for adolescents to receive the HIV care, treatment, and support they need.

Through the Egmont Trust Funding, TTF will create youth-friendly spaces that promote HIV awareness, sexual reproductive health, and psychosocial therapy with age-appropriate interventions.

The PEPFAR Small Grants program will enable us to use football coaching sessions, community school football coach training, football for health tournaments, community school outreach, and routine care for people living with HIV and AIDS (PLWH) at the TTF clinic as a medium to reach more than 3,180 young people to increase HIV awareness, improve life skills, and create a supportive community environment for young people.

We are excited to take some of the lessons learned from the TTF Clinic, where we provide supportive HIV learning environments for young people, and develop these skills in the community.

Many of these interventions have been supported through donations from private individuals. Your donations help us refine our approaches so that we can scale them up and partner with big donors to reach more people.

TTF USA Board visit - every amount makes a difference!

In May 2019, TTF USA Board Members Colleen Lindner and Michelle Meade spent two weeks at the TTF Zambia office. In anticipation of their trip, they raised over USD$2,000 through a GoFundMe campaign to revamp the nutrition program and take the staff out for a much-needed one-day staff retreat. Thanks to this support, 25 undernourished children and their families received nutritional support for three months. Read more about one of the beneficiaries of this initiative here.
We also spent a lot of time working on a three-year strategic plan for the organization. The team took time to reflect on the vision and mission of TTF and how we want to move forward. It’s very exciting to recall where TTF has come from, how much it has grown over the years, and most importantly, the changes we have made and will continue to make in the lives of our clients.

The process culminated in a one-day staff retreat. It was a fun and reflective day for staff and the board, packed with practical exercises and fun games to help build relationships and help staff see the value of each person in the team and how improving communication can help improve teamwork and lead the team to achieve results.

We also took time to appreciate some of the very hard-working staff. Our cleaner and office help, Patricia, got the award for the most hard-working staff in 2018, and our Deputy Director of Programmes and Operations, Justin got the award for the longest-serving TTF member of staff. Hearty congratulations to both!

NUTRITION: EAT WELL, BE WELL

10/3/2019

Good nutrition is an integral part of HIV management. When a child living with HIV is malnourished their body is unable to properly absorb medication and they are likely to experience HIV related infections and potential treatment failure which may lead to death.

Unfortunately, funding towards the nutrition program has been limited, but through private donations from individuals like you, we were able to support 25 undernourished children and their families from May 2019 to July 2019. This money was raised through a GoFundMe Campaign launched by our TTF USA Board Members Colleen Lindner and Michelle Meade.

Meet one of the beneficiaries of this program - five year old Peter Ngoma. Peter first came to the TTF Clinic in May 2019 and weighed only 12.7kg (28 lbs).

Peter was ill, malnourished and so weak that he could not walk without support. He tested positive for HIV and was enrolled in the Nutrition Programme right away, which provided a food package every two weeks to his family. The food package consists of mealie meal (a national staple of grounded maize), cooking oil, sugar, eggs and fruits.

After being on the programme for 3 months, Peter gained 1.5kg (3.3 lbs). He continues to receive HIV treatment at the TTF clinic and noticeably happier. He feels happy coming to the clinic and says hi to everyone.

It costs only USD$276 to provide nutritional support to a family for three months, but makes a lifetime difference in ensuring the health and stability of children who need good nutrition to tolerate their HIV medication.

Mother and Baby at the TTF Clinic
Many people don't realize that it is totally possible for a woman living with HIV to have a healthy, HIV negative baby. If we can get a woman on HIV treatment early enough into her pregnancy, we can suppress the virus within her body, reducing the risk of HIV transmission to Zero.

Over the past two years our prevention of mother to child transmission program has been 100% successful, with no child being born with HIV when we have got the mother onto treatment at least three months prior to deliver.

Many government clinics lack basic supplies for women during labor, meaning women are either denied access to the facility or have an increased risk of complications during pregnancy due to basic supplies not being available. Our birthing hampers can be life changing, being the difference between a woman giving with at home, or safely in a facility.

Charity with her birthing hamper
Just $50 can provide a simple hamper of medical supplies, diapers, blankets, disinfectant, scalpels, gloves umbilical clips,  and chitenges (fabric), can provide the right tools at a clinical level for a mother to have a safe birth.

None of the work we do would be possible without your support. Because of you Babies can be born HIV free. Because of you children can get onto treatment and live long healthy lives.

HIV treatment does work and you are making it possible for people to be healthy, happy and live long lives.

Please continue to make this work possible by donating to Tiny Tim & Friends and give the gift of good health.

ENDING HIV TRANSMISSION - ONE CHILD AT A TIME

Living with HIV does not mean you will transmit the virus. All of the children you see above are HIV negative, thanks to your donations. By supporting Tiny Tim & Friends you are ending HIV transmission one child at a time.

If Tiny Tim & Friends can identify a woman living with HIV, get her on treatment and taking her medication correctly in the early stages of pregnancy, there is NO risk she will transmit the virus to her baby. Taken correctly HIV treatment will suppress the virus within her body to undetectable and untransmittable levels.

Thanks to your ongoing support we are able to work in the community to identify vulnerable pregnant women; thanks to your donations we are able to provide high quality medical treatment to ensure the mother is healthy; because of you we can provide specialist counselling and HIV education specifically for pregnant women to support them in understanding HIV and the importance of continual treatment for both their health and the health of their unborn child.

Your donations mean the next generation of children in Zambia can be born healthy - your support is helping to end HIV transmission from mother to child.

In the past 5 years,  98% of the babies born to women receiving treatment at the TTF Clinic have been born HIV negative. With your continued donations we can reach out to women earlier in their pregnancies and ensure we can achieve 100% success and zero transmission.

  • Only $30 pays for 50 women's transport to the TTF Clinic to ensure they attend their appointments on time.
  • Only $50 provides a pregnant woman with a birthing hamper of equipment to ensure she can have a safe hospital delivery
  • Only $120 will provide medical treatment and counselling support for a woman throughout her pregnancy
